WSSU Heritage Society Inducts 17 New Members

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) welcomed 17 new Heritage Society members during an induction ceremony on Dec. 4.

The Heritage Society, established to honor individuals who’ve established an endowed fund or included the university in their estate plans, investments are truly transformational, says WSSU Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson, who is among the newest class of inductees.

Old Nursing Building Gets Demolished

Demolition is underway on the Old Nursing Building, the previous home of Winston-Salem State University’s (WSSU) nursing program.

 Construction crews from D.H. Griffin Companies began the demolition process in September.

“Salvageable items like LED lights, air conditioning units, and similar effects were removed from the building,” says Timothy McMullen, associate vice chancellor for Facilities Management. “Due to the building’s age, obsolescence and poor condition, it was not financially feasible to renovate or adapt it for other uses.”

WSSU Receives $600,000 Mellon Foundation Grant for Humanities

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) a $600,000 grant to strengthen its programs in the humanities. WSSU is one of the few public HBCUs – and one of only five University of North Carolina System institutions – to receive a grant over the Mellon Foundation’s 50-year history.

The three-year grant will provide the infrastructure to support faculty development and curriculum redesign for courses in art and visual studies, English, history, and music.

WSSU and Wake Forest will collaborate to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the 19th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Keynote Speech featuring CNN political commentator Angela Rye. The theme is: “On Common Ground: Embracing Our Voices.”

Meis Family $100,000 Gift Helps Bridge the Gap at WSSU

A $100,000 gift is helping Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) students stay on track and graduate. A Winston-Salem couple have established the Dr. Paul and Marcia Meis Graduation Scholars Fund, which will provide $2,000 scholarships for 40 high-achieving juniors and seniors over the next three years.   For fall semester, 13 WSSU students received scholarships through the fund. “We thank Dr. Paul and Marcia Meis for their support of Winston-Salem State University students,” said Dr. LaTanya Afolayan, vice chancellor for University Advancement.

WSSU Giving Tuesday raises record $87,000

The Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Foundation has set a university record for one-day giving, raising more than $87,000 in 24 hours.

WSSU Giving Tuesday, which was held on Dec. 4, smashed this year’s goal of $50,000. The one-day event also set a Giving Tuesday record for the number of individual donors, with 837 alumni, faculty, staff and friends donating.

Isaac Moore, director of alumni engagement, said he and others in University Advancement knew the day was going to be big when the live tally showed $25,000 by 11 a.m.
